Margaret Thatcher
by TheEtruscan at 14:25 July 18, 1982

Remember the Falkland Islands. The Argentineans call them Islas Malvinas and have a claim to them. In April of 1982 they grabbed them.

The Iron Lady (Margaret Thatcher), who everybody thinks is great, made the old lion of the British Empire roar and went to war to retake them.

What a waste (nearly 1000 casualties)! While England may have regained control, the issue is not resolved and will surface again.

Would it not have been better (and probably still is) if Argentina and England sat down to find a suitable compromise?

England could have said: "We have other desolate and windswept islands with similar characteristics (the Orkneys, Hebrides and Shetlands come to mind). Why don't you Argentina pay for the relocation of those who among the less than 3,000 inhabitants want to leave and we then divide the mineral and fishing rights if any in perpetuity?"

Margaret Thatcher died on April 8, 2013 at the age of 87. Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, LG OM PC FRS (nee Roberts, 13 October 1925 8 April 2013) was a British politician who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and the Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990.

I never lived in England so I don't know how her policies effected the lives of people in UK. Mainly they were about deregulations and they didn't help in the long run or were instrumental in setting the stage as England is more so in the same economic crisis that started in 2008 as the rest of the Western advanced democracies.
